The Department specialises in the diagnosis and treatment of mesenchymal tumours in adults, with an area of expertise that includes soft tissue sarcomas, bone sarcomas, gastrointestinal stromal tumours (GISTs) and peritoneal mesothelioma.
The Unit’s mission is to care for patients through a multidimensional approach that integrates clinical practice, research and the dissemination of knowledge.
Clinical activities are carried out in the following settings:
- Inpatient care
- Outpatient care
Patient care is always provided through a multidisciplinary approach, thanks to collaboration with surgical oncologists, radiation oncologists, specialists in rehabilitation and palliative care, pathologists, radiologists and other professionals in diagnostic and therapeutic services.
Diagnostic and therapeutic pathways are constantly aligned with best practice within the international medical community, thanks to active participation in:
- The drafting of national and international clinical practice guidelines
- The availability of international clinical trials on new drugs and innovative multidisciplinary therapeutic strategies.
The Centre promotes close collaboration at regional, national and international levels with the leading institutions specialising in sarcomas in Europe, the Americas and Australia.
- The National Rare Tumours Network, active throughout the country, for which it coordinates the clinical, scientific and organisational aspects
- The Lombardy Oncology Network, within which it coordinates the section dedicated to sarcomas and rare tumours
- EURACAN, the European reference network for adult patients with rare tumours, for which it coordinates the sarcoma domain
- The Joint Action on Networks of Expertise on Cancer -2 (JANE-2), which it coordinates with the aim of implementing seven cross-cutting networks to support patients at European level
- SELNET, the Euro-Latin American clinical and translational research network for sarcomas
The Centre works closely with various associations for patients with rare cancers, organising information events (annual meetings, teleconferences, forums) with the aim of raising awareness and empowering patients, and of facilitating a more informed and effective diagnostic and treatment pathway.
