The General Management of the IRCCS National Cancer Institute Foundation in Milan is led by Dr. Maria Teresa Montella, who was appointed by the Lombardy Region in January 2025. As General Director, Dr. Montella is responsible for the overall management of the Institute, coordinating clinical, scientific, and administrative activities to ensure excellence in cancer care and research.
In carrying out her management duties, she relies not only on strategic leadership but also on the following staff units:

The General Management also relies on the following functions:
- Religious Services
- Occupational Health and Safety (SPP)
- Occupational Physician and Employee Health Surveillance
- Public Relations Office (URP)
- Internal Auditing - Internal Control System
- Transparency and Anti-Corruption
- Privacy and DPO
The General Director is appointed by the Board of Directors upon the recommendation of the President of the Lombardy Region and serves his or her term under an exclusive private employment contract.
The General Director is responsible for the overall management of the Foundation:
- healthcare,
- administrative,
- and technical-financial.
He adopts the measures and initiatives aimed at implementing the strategic guidelines issued by the Board of Directors and the General Health Directorate of the Lombardy Region.
He drafts the corporate planning documents to be submitted for evaluation and approval by the Board of Directors:
- corporate organizational plan and staffing levels,
- budget,
- financial statements,
- balance sheet,
- performance plan,
- quarterly and annual reports on the Foundation’s performance.
Adopts a planning document defining the duties and responsibilities of managers for the purposes of corporate management.
Agrees annually with the Scientific Director on the research budget.
Acts as the employer and data controller for personal data.
Appoints the Administrative and Medical Directors
Appoints the Executive Board with which it coordinates the Foundation’s management activities
Assigns executive management responsibilities
Ratifies the appointment of the Board of Auditors
