Typology: Clinical Area, Simple Structure

Our mission is to manage the radiological diagnosis of malignant and benign conditions in the field of oncology, as well as any associated orthopaedic and/or trauma-related conditions.

ORGANISATION
It is a simple unit attached to the Diagnostic and Interventional Radiology Department.
The unit carries out its specific activities in accordance with internal quality protocols, which are reviewed and updated periodically.

CLINICAL ACTIVITIES
The unit carries out diagnostic activities relating to the musculoskeletal system, focusing on diagnosis, assessment of response and evaluation of fracture risk in the following categories: 

  • Metastatic bone lesions from solid tumours
  • Bone involvement in haematological malignancies (e.g. multiple myeloma, lymphomas, etc.)
  • Assessment of solitary bone lesions
  • Characterisation of symptomatic conditions unrelated to the primary disease in cancer patients
  • Monitoring of osteonecrotic complications (primarily involving the mandible and femurs)
  • Trauma diagnosis in cancer patients The SS also promotes the development, updating and implementation of a structured pathway incorporating the various methods used in the diagnosis of musculoskeletal lesions.

Finally, it works in collaboration with the Department of Medical Physics to optimise examinations in accordance with radiation protection guidelines.

RESEARCH ACTIVITIES
The unit actively participates in research projects with other clinical units or with the institute’s research departments, and in particular with the Department of Oncology and Haematology to assess response in clinical trials.

EDUCATIONAL ORGANISATION
Tutoring and clinical training for postgraduate students in Radiology at the University of Milan, involving participation in day-to-day diagnostic work and teaching activities, including lectures.
