Dr. Deraco Marcello

Marcello Deraco, MD, is a pioneer in the innovative treatment of Peritoneal Surface Malignancies (PSM), particularly with CRS HIPEC and PIPAC techniques. He graduated in Medicine and Surgery in July 1987 with distinction and completed his specialization in General Surgery in October 1992, also with distinction, at the University of Messina. In 1993, he obtained a Specialization Diploma in Clinical Oncology at the University of Paris IX.

Dr. Deraco’s advanced training includes a 3-year fellowship at the Institut Gustave Roussy in Villejuif, France; The Royal Marsden Hospital in London, UK; and the Washington Cancer Institute at the Washington Hospital Center, Washington DC, USA.

Except for his international training periods, Dr. Deraco has carried out his entire clinical and scientific career at the Fondazione IRCCS Istituto Nazionale dei Tumori in Milan, where he currently serves as the Director of the Peritoneal Tumors Unit (SS Tumori Peritoneali). This unit is recognized nationally and internationally for the treatment of Appendix Tumors, Peritoneal Mesothelioma, Pseudomyxoma Peritonei, and Peritoneal Metastases. Dr. Deraco has performed over 1,300 CRS-HIPEC and PIPAC procedures in these areas.

In addition to his clinical expertise, Dr. Deraco leads intensive clinical and biological research as Principal Investigator or Co-Investigator in numerous ongoing and completed translational studies. These studies have resulted in approximately 300 scientific publications in international journals, with an h-index of 60.

Dr. Deraco is a founding member and Co-Director of the European School of Peritoneal Surface Oncology (ESPSO), where he also mentors and tutors future specialists. From 2010 to 2014, he served as a Contract Professor at the School of Specialization in Digestive Surgery at the University of Rome TOR VERGATA. He is currently a Tutor at the School of Specialization in General Surgery at the University of Milan. In 2013, Dr. Deraco achieved National Scientific Qualification as a First and Second-Level Professor in General Surgery.

As a scientific leader, Dr. Deraco has organized and directed multiple significant events, including the 2006 PSOGI Consensus Conference in Milan, which led to the creation of the International Recommendations on PSM. He also directed the XIII PSOGI Congress in Venice in 2023, during which the Multi-Society Consensus on PSM was drafted and published. He is a member of the expert commission for the development of the AIOM/ISS National Guidelines on PSM.

Dr. Deraco is President of the Italian Society of Oncological Surgery (SICO) and a member of the PSOGI Board (Peritoneal Surface Oncology Group International), among other prestigious roles in the scientific community.
