Prof. Kusamura Shigeki

Dr. Shigeki Kusamura is a surgical oncologist internationally recognized for his expertise in the advanced treatment of peritoneal cancers. He specializes in cytoreductive surgery and HIPEC (Hyperthermic Intraperitoneal Chemotherapy), currently considered the most effective therapy for several advanced peritoneal malignancies, including peritoneal metastases from colorectal cancer, appendiceal cancer, pseudomyxoma peritonei, peritoneal mesothelioma, and primary peritoneal serous carcinoma.

Born in Tokyo and an Italian citizen, he specialized in Gastrointestinal Surgical Oncology at the Vita-Salute San Raffaele University. Since 2000, he has worked at the Fondazione IRCCS Istituto Nazionale dei Tumori in Milan, a national and international referral center for peritoneal surface malignancies.

He is a faculty member and scientific secretary of the European School of Peritoneal Surface Oncology (ESPSO) and author of over 180 international scientific publications (H-index 60). He coordinates the international PSOGI registries for pseudomyxoma peritonei and mesothelioma and led the PSOGI international consensus statements on these rare diseases.

Dr. Kusamura has received grants from AIRC for studies on cisplatin pharmacokinetics during HIPEC and on tumor microenvironment immunity in pseudomyxoma. In 2020, he obtained the Italian National Scientific Qualification as Full and Associate Professor in General Surgery (sector 06/C1). According to www.Expertscape.com, he ranks as expert #1 worldwide for HIPEC, #2 for pseudomyxoma, and #3 for peritoneal carcinomatosis.
