Maura Massimino graduated with honors from the University of Milan in 1987.
She obtained her specialization in Hematology in 1991 and in Pediatrics in 1995, both from the University of Milan.
Since 1987, she has worked at the Pediatric Oncology Unit of the National Cancer Institute (now Fondazione IRCCS Istituto Nazionale dei Tumori) in Milan, initially as a resident until 1989, then as a permanent staff member. In May 2009, she became Deputy Director, and in July 2010, Director.
Since 2000, she has been responsible for a Functional Unit dedicated to pediatric neuro-oncology. Her clinical research focuses particularly on pediatric brain tumors, lymphomas, and thyroid cancer. She is also involved in evaluating long-term effects and quality of life in survivors.
She is the author of over 350 published scientific articles, more than 500 conference presentations, and several book chapters. She has served as Principal Investigator (PI), co-PI, or collaborator on several peer-reviewed funded projects and phase I–III clinical trials. She coordinates the brain tumor group within AIEOP (Italian Association of Pediatric Hematology and Oncology) and is the national PI for studies on medulloblastoma, ependymoma, and DIPG.
She obtained her qualifications as Associate Professor and Full Professor of Pediatrics in Italian universities in April 2017 and April 2018, respectively, and was awarded the title of Commendatore della Repubblica (Commander of the Order of Merit of the Italian Republic) in 2023.
She is also a contract professor at the Specialization Schools of Pediatrics and Oncology at the University of Milan.
