Dr. Vitellaro Marco

He graduated in Medicine and Surgery from the University of Palermo in 1990, and obtained his specialization in General Surgery from the University of Milan in 1997. Since 2000, he has been a senior physician at the Complex Structure of Oncological Surgery 2 (Colon-Rectum) at the IRCCS National Cancer Institute Foundation in Milan. Since 2017, he has been Head of the Simple Structure for Hereditary Digestive System Tumors.

He has extensive experience in laparoscopic surgery since 1994 and in colorectal laparoscopic surgery for patients with hereditary syndromes since 2003. He has perfected his training with several study periods abroad.

From 2011 to 2013, he served as Visiting Assistant Professor of Surgery at New York Presbyterian Hospital - Weill Cornell Medical Center, where he contributed to the development of new approaches in minimally invasive colorectal surgery.

His scientific activity focuses on hereditary digestive system tumors and colorectal surgery, with numerous publications in international journals.

He is the principal investigator of numerous research projects and in 2023 filed a patent for tumor screening through liquid biopsy in patients with Lynch Syndrome.

He is a member of several scientific societies, including the International Society for Gastrointestinal Hereditary Tumours (InSiGHT), the European Hereditary Tumour Group (EHTG), the Italian Society of Oncological Surgery (SICO), and the Italian Association for Tumor Familial and Hereditary Conditions.

He serves as a representative for the Cancer Institute in the European Network ERN-GENTURIS (Genetic Tumor Risk Syndromes) for Lynch Syndrome and Familial Polyposis.

He collaborates with national and international multidisciplinary groups to improve diagnostic, surveillance, and therapeutic pathways in patients with hereditary tumor predisposition syndromes.

He is a lecturer at the European School of Oncology (ESO).

He teaches General Surgery in the Nursing Degree Course at the University of Milan (UNIMI).
