Dr. Guaglio Marcello

Dr. Marcello Guaglio is a surgeon specialized in the treatment of colorectal cancer and the advanced management of peritoneal malignancies. He has been serving in the Colorectal Surgery Unit and the Peritoneal Tumor Subdivision since 2011.

He regularly performs surgical procedures for the treatment of colon and rectal cancer using laparoscopic and robotic techniques, employing the Da Vinci® robotic system. He is specialized in cytoreductive surgery combined with hyperthermic intraperitoneal chemotherapy (CRS-HIPEC), a procedure successfully used in the treatment of peritoneal carcinomatosis from colorectal cancer, peritoneal mesothelioma, pseudomyxoma peritonei, and appendiceal tumors.

He graduated with honors in Medicine and Surgery in 2006 from the University of Milano-Bicocca, completed his residency in General Surgery with top marks at the same university in 2013, and later obtained a diploma from the European School of Peritoneal Surgical Oncology (ESPSO).

Throughout his career, he has been deeply committed to refining minimally invasive surgical techniques, including laparoscopic and robotic surgery, and spent a training period abroad at the Hospital Clínic of Barcelona.

He is actively involved in both clinical and translational research in oncology, with a particular focus on the development of 3D cell models (organoids). He is the author of over 90 indexed scientific publications and serves as principal investigator or co-investigator on numerous ongoing research projects, including the prestigious “Accelerator Award”, an international grant funded with €2 million by AIRC and CRUK.

He is also a member of several scientific societies, including the Italian Society of Surgical Oncology (SICO) and the European Society of Surgical Oncology (ESSO).
