Dr. Taffurelli Giovanni

Dr. Giovanni Taffurelli obtained his Degree in Medicine and Surgery from the Alma Mater Studiorum – University of Bologna in 2010. Beginning the following year, he undertook his residency in General Surgery at the same institution, based at the S. Orsola-Malpighi University Hospital in Bologna, and obtained the title of Specialist in General Surgery in 2017.

In 2016, he completed a clinical observership at the University Hospital of Heidelberg (Germany), within the Department of Visceral and Transplant Surgery directed by Prof. M. Buckler. He subsequently pursued doctoral 
studies in Surgical Sciences from 2018 to 2020, culminating in the attainment of a PhD with a dissertation focused on advanced laparoscopic techniques in pancreatic resections.

From 2017 to 2024, Dr. Taffurelli served as a General and Colorectal Surgeon at the hospitals of Faenza and Ravenna, under the mentorship of Prof. G. Ugolini. Since 2021, he has been a member of the Colorectal Surgery Unit directed by Dr. I. Montroni. In 2024, he joined the National Cancer Institute in Milan.

Throughout his clinical career, Dr. Taffurelli has concentrated primarily on oncologic surgery of the colon and rectum—particularly laparoscopic and transanal approaches (TaTME)—as well as on the management of inflammatory bowel diseases and Gastro-Entero-Pancreatic neuroendocrine tumors. His clinical and research interests notably include the care of elderly and frail patients, the adoption of innovative surgical technologies, and multidisciplinary treatment strategies.

He is the author and co-author of numerous peer-reviewed publications in international journals and is a member of the Editorial Board of the Journal of Surgical Research (JSR).
Dr. Taffurelli holds membership in several professional societies, including the American Society of Colon and Rectal Surgery (ASCRS), the European Society of Surgical Oncology (ESSO), the European Association for Endoscopic Surgery (EAES), and the Italian Association for Neuroendocrine Tumors (ItaNET).
