Degree in Biological Sciences, specialization in Applied Genetics.  

After graduation, I carried out research on an ongoing basis first at the New York University School of Medicine (1984-1989), and subsequently at the National Cancer Institute of Milan (1989-present). 

Since 1989, I have been involved in the characterization of the molecular mechanisms involved in the development of solid tumors, with particular interest in thyroid tumors. In this field, I have contributed with important studies: isolation and characterization of TRK oncogenes, functional characterization of RET oncogenes; identification of the molecular characteristics that favour oncogenic rearrangements; functional role of differentially expressed genes in thyroid tumors; role of senescence in thyroid tumors; identification of non-oncogenes necessary for the survival of thyroid tumor cells. 

I have also contributed to the identification of the molecular mechanisms involved in GIST and dermatofibrosarcoma protuberans.
