Dr. Stanzi Alessia

Graduated in medicine at University of Milan (UNIMI) in 2008, she completed thoracic surgical training in 2013 (UNIMI), after a significant experience in Belgium, where she conducted both clinical activity (University Hospitals Leuven) and research (Laboratory for Experimental Thoracic Surgery, Catholic University Leuven), achieving in 2013 the “Certificate of medical specialist with additional training in thoracic surgery”. She worked in UZ Leuven overall for 3.5 years, performing over 200 major surgical procedures as first surgeon, including 29 lung transplantations, and achieving independence. She also dedicated herself to research on ex-vivo lung perfusion, on mediastinal staging in lung cancer and received the 2011 European Society for Organ Transplantation (ESOT) Young Investigator Award. 

From 04/2015 to 12/2018 she was consultant at Ospedale S. Croce e Carle di Cuneo, where she performed almost 400 surgical procedures (of which almost 300 as first surgeon) including image-guided surgery in hybrid room. She was thoracic surgery referent at local and regional multidisciplinary tumor boards. 

Since 12/2018 at the Fondazione IRCCS Istituto Nazionale dei Tumori (INT), she performs both open and minimally invasive/VATS surgery to treat diseases of lung, chest wall, pleura and mediastinum and thoracic endoscopy (EBUS-TBNA). 

Since 2021 she collaborates with the Pediatric Surgery Service and Pediatric Oncology, treating pediatric thoracic tumors. 

She was acting director of Thoracic Surgery Unit at INT from July 16th 2024 to Aug 25th 2024. 

Tutor for thoracic surgery residents from UNIMI since 2024, her teaching activity includes classes for oncology and general surgery residents since 2022.  

She is member of MET-I (MEsothelioma Team Italy) and of the European Society of Thoracic Surgeons (ESTS).
