 Aims

1) to identify, predict and explain individual susceptibility to cardiovascular diseases (CVD) in adolescents and young adults (AYA) with breast cancer (BC) treated with curative intent;

2) to identify circulating microRNAs as potential biomarkers for cardiac events in young BC patients treated with curative intent;

3) to discover the causal role of the emerging microRNAs in the treatment-induced cardiotoxicity.

We will use Bayesian networks and temporal Bayesian networks to predict treatment-related CVD in AYA with BC and to assess causal relationships between treatment, covariates and outcomes mixing clinical and biomarker information. We will analyse the potential of circulating microRNAs as cardiac biomarkers in young BC patients in the multicentre randomized phase III NeoALTTO study (training set). Finally, with a reverse translational approach we will go back to the laboratory towards a mechanicistic-based anti-tumour approach.

The project results will contribute to personalised treatment decisions and survivors' follow-up strategies for AYA with BC.
