Overweight, insulin resistance, and hormonal imbalances increase the risk of breast cancer recurrence. The DIANA-5 trial, which investigated the effectiveness of a macro-Mediterranean® diet in preventing recurrences, did not find a direct association with metabolic syndrome, insulin, and testosterone, although high adherence to the diet appears to reduce the risk.

We hypothesize that other dietary factors, such as gut dysbiosis, inflammation, and metabolic imbalances, may influence tumor progression and recurrence development. The impact of diet on dysbiosis and inflammation in breast cancer recurrence remains poorly studied.

This project will explore the relationship between the microbiota, metabolism, and recurrence, identifying new biomarkers in the plasma of DIANA-5 participants through omics analyses and systems biology approaches, with the goal of developing more targeted prevention strategies.
