Breast Radiology

MISSION
Our mission is to provide prompt diagnostic imaging and histological diagnosis, as well as a precise clinical assessment in cases of confirmed breast disease; where no disease is found, we aim to provide sufficient information to plan the next steps in the diagnostic pathway (spontaneous and/or organised screening).

ORGANISATION
It is a simple unit attached to the Diagnostic and Interventional Radiology Department.
The unit is an active part of the Foundation’s Breast Unit and carries out its specific activities in accordance with internal and external quality protocols, which are reviewed and updated periodically.

CLINICAL ACTIVITIES
▪ clinical activities providing patient care through breast radiological examinations useful in various situations
▪ care for the general population (spontaneous screening) to diagnose breast disease and, where necessary, refer patients to a specialist surgeon and/or oncologist for appropriate treatment
▪ research activities, with continuous staff training on new technologies, diagnostic techniques and equipment
▪ teaching activities for the training of doctors and specialists entering the field of breast medicine or seeking to specialise further.

RESEARCH ACTIVITIES
The Unit plays an active role in national and international scientific research and has produced numerous scientific publications on breast cancer, covering both diagnostic and therapeutic aspects.
It is actively involved in numerous multicentre studies, primarily focusing on diagnostics.
It plays an active role in numerous national and international scientific societies, often holding a leadership position (SIRM, EUSOMA, EUSOBI, SENONETWORK, GISMA).

EDUCATIONAL ORGANISATION
▪ National reference centre for interventional breast radiology, providing ongoing teaching and training for various Italian universities.
▪ Centre for ongoing training in interventional breast radiology (under stereotactic, ultrasound and MRI guidance) for SIRM (Italian Society of Medical Radiology).
▪ National reference centre for the use of contrast-enhanced mammography (CEM) and for related training and educational activities.
▪ National reference centre for the active surveillance of high-risk women and/or carriers of the BRCA1/2 genetic mutation.
▪ Vice-chair of the national executive committee of the breast imaging section of SIRM.
