“Umberto Veronesi” Scientific Library

Milano
Via Giacomo Venezian, 1, 20133 Milano MI

Tipologia: Research Area

The “Umberto Veronesi” Scientific Library has supported the work of clinical and experimental researchers since the early years of its establishment in the 1930s. It specializes in scientific documentation in the biomedical field, with a particular focus on oncology.

Thanks to its membership in BiblioSan (the Library System of Biomedical Research Institutions) and SBBL (Lombardy Biomedical Library System), the library has access to thousands of online journals, e-books, as well as a wide range of biomedical databases and research support tools. The virtual catalog of available resources can be accessed via the institutional Intranet.

Collaborations and memberships

  • EAHIL (European Association for Health Information and Libraries);
  • BiblioSan, the networked library system of biomedical research institutions promoted by the Ministry of Health. BiblioSan connects all the libraries of IRCCSs, IZSs (Experimental Zooprophylactic Institutes), ISS (National Institute of Health), INAIL (National Institute for Insurance against Accidents at Work), and ASSR (Regional Health Services Agency), providing thousands of online scientific journals and access to the most important biomedical databases, accessible via the institutional Intranet;
  • SBBL, the Lombardy Biomedical Library System, established by Regional Law No. 41 of December 12, 1994, and composed of libraries belonging to universities, IRCCSs (Scientific Institutes for Research, Hospitalization and Healthcare), and research institutions in the Lombardy Region. It aims to promote the dissemination of scientific information in line with regional health and social-health policies. Thanks to annual funding from the Region, this library network provides all healthcare professionals access to a shared catalog and packages of online journals;
  • NILDE (Network for Inter-Library Document Exchange): the document delivery system used by BiblioSan relies on ACNP, the National Collective Archive of Periodicals available online, from which information about libraries and their holdings can be retrieved. This enables the exchange of scientific documentation with hundreds of Italian libraries, with the goal of fostering cooperation in document delivery services, promoting reciprocity among libraries, and encouraging the adoption of uniform quality standards in full compliance with current regulations;
  • GIDIF-RBM (Italian Group of Information Professionals in the Pharmaceutical Industry and Biomedical Research Institutions).

Access

Access to the Library and its reading room is open. All INT personnel and external users are welcome to use the Library’s services.

The library’s print collection comprises over 4,000 volumes, classified according to the rules of the National Library of Medicine, and around 700 scientific journals catalogued according to the International Standard Bibliographic Description for Serials (ISBD(S)). It also includes the historical archive of all publications by the Institute’s researchers dating back to 1929, the year of its foundation.

The Library and its reading room are accessible for bibliographic inquiries and for consultation, study, and professional development activities. Current journals and the most recent issues are always available online from any computer or device connected to the Institute’s network (via IP recognition). Journal issues held in print from 1986 onwards are stored in two on-site repositories at the Foundation, while issues prior to 1986 are kept in an external storage facility. Volumes or individual articles from on-site collections are retrieved upon request by Library staff, while articles from the externally stored issues are sent electronically to the Library by the external storage staff via a dedicated platform.

The reading room offers several open-access computer stations for consulting the Foundation’s bibliographic resources. Requests for materials that are not immediately available may be submitted to the Library staff in person, via email, or through a dedicated online form, accessible via the NILDE (national) and SBBL (regional) interlibrary exchange services.

Photocopies of books and journals can be requested from the Library staff, who will make the copies using the photocopiers available during opening hours, in compliance with current copyright and text reproduction laws (Law No. 633 of April 20, 1941 and subsequent amendments). Specifically, photocopies may be made for study and research purposes only, and must not exceed 15% of the total number of pages in any monograph or journal issue; any commercial use is strictly prohibited. Photocopies of materials held by the Library are provided free of charge. The number of photocopies made available to external users (i.e., individuals who are not INT employees, fellows, or contractors) is at the discretion of the Library staff. Additionally, two printers are available in the reading room, subject to compliance with the aforementioned copyright regulations.

The Library provides Document Delivery services both within the SBBL network and through the NILDE (Network for Inter-Library Document Exchange) system, which operates through ACNP, the National Collective Archive of Periodicals, accessible online.
