Epidemiology and Prevention Unit

Descrizione:

Head: Sabina Sieri

The research activities of the Epidemiology and Prevention Unit include:
a) Large prospective studies on the association between diet, hormones, lifestyle, genetic factors and cancer incidence and recurrence;
b) Cross-sectional studies (surveys) on cancer risk factors.

PROSPECTIVE STUDIES
Large prospective studies represent research platforms with enormous potential for testing the most important hypotheses linking modifiable environmental factors and genetic factors to cancer risk.

EPIC (European Prospective Investigation into Cancer and Nutrition) is a prospective cohort study carried out in the 90s, which involved 10 European countries and recruited over 520,000 participants (about 47,000 in Italy alone). The collection of detailed information and blood samples, stored in large biobanks, has made it possible to evaluate the association between diet, metabolic factors, lifestyle, genetic factors and incidence of cancer and other chronic-degenerative diseases.

ORDET (Hormones and Diet in the Etiology of Breast Cancer) is a prospective cohort study with a biobank. 10,788 healthy women were recruited in the 1980s from the Varese province with the aim of evaluating the role of endocrine-metabolic factors and their interaction with diet in breast cancer pathogenesis.

The YOUGOODY study aims to establish a prospective cohort using pre-existing channels (large retail customers), with the primary objective of identifying nutritional and lifestyle profiles associated with the risk of developing chronic degenerative diseases and those profiles whichare more effective in preventing disease onset.

The IDEFICS study was a prospective European study on the prevention of childhood obesity involving 12 European countries. The follow-up of these children and the recruitment of their family members continued with the I-FAMILY study. https://www.ifamilystudy.eu/

CROSS-SECTIONAL STUDIES (SURVEY)
The aim of the CHINT project is to document preventable cancer risk factors in a sample of Chinese citizens. Lifestyles (smoking, alcohol, physical inactivity, diet) and various objective measures associated with disease risk are collected and related to participants’ socioeconomic and demographic characteristics.
