Interventional Ultrasound

MISSION
The mission is to perform ultrasound-guided invasive procedures across a wide range of areas within oncology.

ORGANISATION
It is a simple unit attached to the Diagnostic and Interventional Radiology Department. The unit carries out its specific activities in accordance with internal quality protocols, which are reviewed and updated periodically.

CLINICAL ACTIVITIES
The Unit performs biopsy procedures and supports other interventional disciplines by providing the technology required for invasive diagnostic and therapeutic procedures. Therapeutic interventional procedures are carried out, such as thermal ablations in the abdominal region, drainage of fluid collections (abscesses, empyemas, cysts) and pleural or abdominal effusions. Peritoneal catheters are placed for paracentesis, chest drains, percutaneous pyelostomies to relieve obstructions of the urinary tract and preserve renal function, percutaneous cystostomies to relieve bladder pressure, and various types of vascular access. The unit contributes to the management of a wide range of post-surgical complications, including in emergency situations. 

RESEARCH ACTIVITIES 
Research activities focus on the development of ultrasound technologies aimed at improving the diagnostic and therapeutic applications of ultrasound, utilising echo-enhancing contrast agents and colour Doppler ultrasound.

EDUCATIONAL ORGANISATION 
Supervision of the postgraduate school in Radiodiagnostics at the University of Milan and coordination of the training of 13 postgraduate students working at the Foundation.
